Half-Day Experience
Cadaqués’ Natural Reserve: Exploring Hidden Coves on a Private Wooden Boat
The Cap de Creus Journey
We experienced this day ourselves and loved it! Here is what it was actually like:
The day started in Port Lligat, the quietest corner of Cadaqués and the cove where the painter Dali and his wife Gala lived. We would highly recommend checking out the house right before! Just make sure to book in advance and set aside about an hour for the visit so you don't have to rush.
After the visit, our captain for the day, Josep, was ready and waiting right on time. A local sailor whose family has called Cadaqués home for more than two centuries, he knows these waters like the back of his hand.
As he welcomed us aboard of his classic wooden fishing boat, sea-ready and beautifully maintained, he shared a bit of history about the region and the Cap de Creus Natural Reserve, setting the perfect stage for the waters we were about to sail.
PORT LLIGAT
There was no fixed itinerary for this trip, instead, the day unfolded naturally based on the winds and the crowds.
Josep knows this coastline by heart, including secret coves that aren't named on any map. Whenever we passed by a popular spot that was starting to fill up, he will simply steer us toward a quieter, calmer alternative.
In his own words: “I always manage to find the coves where no one else goes, so that my guests can experience the privacy and beauty of the coast completely to themselves'"
THE COVES
Once we had spent some time sailing and exploring the hidden coves, we dropped anchor in a quiet, sheltered spot. It was then that Josep opened up a picnic basket full of homemade treats from his family’s garden in Cadaqués.
You could tell everything was prepared with so much love. We tasted some homemade gazpacho made from fresh-picked tomatoes, tortilla with pan con tomate, croquetas, jamón, and chicken… literally all the best local flavors.
To top it off, he even paired the picnic with some fresh local beers and natural wines from a small producer in the local denomination.
PICNIC ON THE WATER
We shifted to one last cove for a final swim before heading back. Sailing the Costa Brava remains one of our absolute favorite experiences in the world. It’s never about speed; it’s about embracing the slow pace of these authentic, traditional boats.
Watching the dramatic rocky cliffs tower over the water, mixed with the green of the trees and the impossibly clear water, just reminds us that there is no better place on earth
